Here’s Where We’re Located
Teeth whitening may be necessary if you’re someone who loves coffee, colas, teas and red wine, hopefully not all at once 😉 Chances are, your teeth are…. a little discolored.
Teeth whitening is just as it sounds. It the method of making your teeth whiter, in the most healthy, safest way. What we do in dentistry, is we use some very safe chemicals, which are loaded up in custom-made trays. These teeth whitening trays are inserted in the patient’s mouth. This will lighten the patient’s teeth gradually, over a two- to three-week period. This will remove any staining which is inherent in the teeth.
Teeth Enamel Coating
Your teeth are coated with enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. Enamel is almost entirely made up of a mineral called hydroxyapatite. This is a network of calcium and phosphate ions bundled into tough crystalline rods to give bones and teeth rigidity. Unfortunately, in between those rods, there’s plenty of space for food, coffee, wine, all those big staining things to set up shop. Regular brushing and flossing will take care of a lot of these foreign substances on your teeth. But, once those stains settle in all cozy in the enamel, you’re going to need something stronger than brushing.
Teeth Whitening Trays
There are a number of systems out there, but ultimately, all work in a very similar way.The active chemical that we use to whiten teeth is carbamide peroxide. It is a very safe chemical to use. The differences with all the systems come in the teeth whitening tray. The manufacturing of the tray, which uses a special system, is very accurate and precise. This enables the chemicals to be held in position to get the teeth nice and white. Some of the other teeth whitening systems also use trays, but it is the way they make the trays that change the results the patients may get.
Teeth Whitening Sensitivities
Very little pain is associated with teeth whitening. Most of it is actually teeth sensitivities. This is very similar to when you have ice in your mouth. This is the kind of sensitivity you can expect to get. This usually lasts for the period of time that you whiten your teeth. It is usually a bit more severe for the first few days. The teeth sensitivity will then settle down. Using something like Sensodyne toothpaste, or, any other sensitive toothpaste, should help combat the sensitivity.
Teeth Whitening Time & Complications
On average, it can take between two to three weeks to whiten your teeth. This depends on how stained your teeth are, to begin with and how white you want them to be.
In our experience, we have never encountered a complication with teeth whitening. Case selection is carefully controlled. This will ensure us that all of the patients that we whiten teeth for are suited for the treatment.
Teeth Whitening & Your Dental Treatment Plan
Teeth whitening is usually incorporated into a much wider treatment plan. Patients may choose to have fillings, crowns, or veneers. Before we aim to do these, we want to ensure that the patient is happy with the color of their teeth.
Our staff would be more than happy to discuss if teeth whitening is right for you.
